Flowabilty may be defined as the powder's ability to flow evenly, by means of gravity and other forces, from the top to the bottom of the hopper and then on to the dosage, compaction, and crushing chambers.
Dr. A. Gioia at the Dow Pharmaceutical Research Labs in Milan defined intrinsic flowability as the property of a powder to flow evenly under the action of gravity and other forces. His technique uses the a flowability index over an arbitrary scale 4 to 40, based on the diameter of the holes within the discs.
